Et tu, U 2?? Donna heads to the concert….and meets Santa!
June 22, 2011

Picky, picky....hope my iPhone isn't considered off-llimits?

Yes I am going to the much talked about U2 360 Tour tonight, at M and T Bank Stadium…I got quite a lot of questions from people on Facebook this morning….to answer some of them: Yes I bought them, no I’m not selling them, yes I know it is VERY hot and muggy tonight, and yes, I know there may be storms. And yes, I am looking forward to the concert. I will rush from the set at 6(do not get in my way), run home, change, stuff down a sandwich-in the car-on the way to the stadium-park far, far away and hike it. That’s living.

Looking at Bono, from faaaarrrrr away....

But the assignment desk now tells me that umbrellas are also verboten tonight…makes sense I guess…if it rains, you can’t pop your umbrella up in a crowd like that, so attendees had better pop a plastic poncho in their pocket, if they can’t stand the idea of getting wet(from rain…sweat will be a different issue)….and you can see from the sign above posted outside the stadium, other items are also off-limits. And I really wanted to take my beach ball!

Hi Santa...whatcha doing this summer??

I met the cutest man at Mercy Medical Center this morning-click here….he has been Santa Claus for 15 years at a local mall…and you can see why…he has the most perfect, fluffy white whiskers. Mrs. Claus was upstairs getting a mammogram while he waited in the lobby, so I had a little chat with him…about his interesting tattoo!….enjoy….And as you hear that first roll of thunder tonight, remember me sitting in the elements, unprotected…but as my Mother always reminded me….”You’re not made of sugar, you won’t melt.” 🙂

Samurai Umbrella…
March 16, 2010

See? Doesn't it look sharp?(not literally...)

OK, let me say this…I am not really good with umbrellas..I tend to lose them, leave them, forget them…no longer be their owner after a short while. But here’s one even I might not lose, because it’s strapped to my back like a….well, like a samurai sword! My first thought when I saw this was to order one for my son who live in NYC…(if you’re interested, here’s a link). One less thing to carry in his hand, when one has a Jack’s coffee in it and the other your man bag…I mean messenger bag.  But then, just as I was considering pulling out the credit card, a brief startling scene flashed through my mind.

Just reach back, and whip it out....

Picture this….my son leaves his apartment on day that threatens rain…he has strapped on his samurai umbrella and is trudging through the streets of the west village, past Marc Jacobs, past Cynthia Rowley, a quick stop into Jack’s Coffee for a latte to go…..and off he heads for the Washington Square/West 4th subway station….noticing people are looking at his umbrella, admiring glances…aren’t they? Probably wondering where he acquired it(from his Mother who has the best taste, that’s where). And down the stairs he trots, hoping to catch the train just as it comes in..he’s running late. Suddenly the sound of heavy footsteps running behind him….the next thing he knows he is face down on some very dirty cement, voices shouting, all he can see is feet running, a child is crying. The person on top of him yells, “I got him! I got him!”  It is some time before the nice policeman lets him up to explain that the weapon on his back… is… just… an… umbrella. Hmmmm. On second thought….

Now would this actually happen? In a pre-9/11 world, probably not. But today..in New York City? I’m not gonna chance it. I still like the  Samurai umbrella, the way it looks and its convenience, (and you may too so here’s a link to buy it)….but I can hear the disdainful words I’ve heard more than a few times from my son when I do something well intended, yes,  but the results are less than stellar…”Good one, Mom“.

For now I’m sticking with the umbrella that I have loved and managed to keep for some time now(after my son left it at my house)….it’s a Callaway Umbrella, and the beauteous thing about this collapsible, is that it is not just automatic open…almost all of them do that..but when you get in your car and the rain is pouring, you don’t have to reach out and pull the umbrella closed, thereby drenching yourself anyway….this one collapses with another touch of the button. Love it….and no one could mistake it for a weapon.

Sometimes it’s the little things….

An Insta weather umbrella of my very own!

An Insta weather umbrella of my very own!

Like an umbrella. I lost my favorite umbrella a few weeks ago…classic black with a silver plated handle that came from England….sounds expensive and it looked it(probably why it’s gone)…but the thing only cost 20 bucks…Got it at the shop London in St. Michaels. Come to think of it the last time I was in there, I put my name, on a list to get another one when it came it and they never called me!! But nevertheless, I have been umbrella-less, except for a broken spoke, blue ,dogeared umbrella with a hole in the nylon. Seriously…raggedy.

So, as I was leaving today to get a salad, with the rain pouring outside…I went with a sad …very pitiful…face to our Promotion Manager…they have all kinds of WBAL goodies….cups, hats, shirts…things that are guarded pretty closely. But they do have great umbrellas…big, really sturdy, and pretty..with the vents that keep it from blowing inside out. All you have to do is walk around with WBAL Insta-Weather printed on the outside. Hey, I don’t mind.  Steve told me  he didn’t have any, but a certain person in the building had and I quote, “thousands of them in their office”. Hmmmmm….I’m on my way.

And there they are, in the office of the Operations Manager..oops I’ve just been corrected…Director of News Operations (or Lord of all he surveys, another adds in a witty fashion) ….In addition to all his other responsibilities, and there are many…he is also evidentally in charge of the umbrellas. “You don’t have a WBAL umbrella?”, he says, after I make my request. “No, I never have had one.”

“All anchors and reporters are supposed to have one, to keep in their car”….for shoots I guess…you’ve seen reporters standing around in the rain haven’t you, doing their live shots, no matter the weather? You are supposed to have a standard issue for just such an occasion. He goes to the box and draws one out….”Here. And keep it in your car.” So bossy. But then again, he is a boss. Anyway…it’s the little things, like having an umbrella in your car, on a rainy day. Thanks Stroh!
