Backstage at the Hippodrome

Without a doubt, Baltimore has a new big party venue…..I never envisioned that the gorgeously restored Hippodrome Theatre could be the site of a big dinner, but last night it proved it can fit the bill.
I was part of University of Maryland Baltimore’s Founder’s Week Gala last night….the guests sat in the balcony for the awards presentation, and then curtains dramatically opened to reveal the stage of the Hippodrome, set beautifully for dinner. It really was breathtaking. What most people don’t realize is that the backstage area is HUGE….cavernous, really. that’s why it can accommodate even the biggest Broadway productions.(Hairspray and My Fair Lady both this fall)
And Anne Ramsey, the wife of UMB President Dr. David Ramsey, did a fabulous job of the dinner….the flower arrangements you see are lilies, hydrangeas, and orchids…all white, spectacular against the black fabric which tented the back stage area. Just really, really well done. And here’s a connection I didn’t know until last night….UMB owned the Hippodrome at one time, and donated it, so that the historic theatre that has seen the likes of Frank Sinatra, Jack Benny, Bob Hope and Dinah Shore could be the core of the west side restoration.
Congrats Hippo and UMB for thinking outside the box!
