I DOUBT you’ll find a better show…..

The Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning Doubt opened last night at the Hippodrome in Baltimore….simply put, a knockout show. Cherry Jones, who you will remember from a variety of movies and roles but may not recognize because her transformation as Sister Aloysonius is so complete, knocks this one out of the park.
Doubt is about a relatively new and popular priest, who Sister Aloysius(Cherry Jones) strongly suspects is a pedophile….but is he? This sister cares only for the children, but in the old fashioned way teachers and sister used to have…they weren’t there to be your friend, or be your confidant, or your social worker but to teach you. Sister Aloysius believes dance and music are “a waste of time””, but she is dogged in her protection of kids who she believes may be in danger from a man who has quite a bit of power over her.
And this surprised me….it’s also very, very funny. Doesn’t sound like it would be, but humor is constant and sharp in this play.
OK,I have to share something else I loved about this play, that I have felt for a long time. It’s 90 minutes with no intermission. Hallelujah! Shows that run on forever, with an intermission that stretches things out another 15 minutes are to me, antiquated. I know, I know, purists will howl, how dare you, you philistine! And perhaps I am. But this is 2007…people work, at real jobs, and they expect their entertainment delivered in roughly two hours. Period. Skip the intermission, tighten the show, and maybe you’ll recoup your profits in only three months, like Doubt. (Of course it doesn’t hurt there’s no orchestra and only three main actors.)

Oh, and on a side note, I had never been to Maggie Moore’s Irish Pub (picture from my table at left)across the street from Hip….had dinner there, and it was delightful! Great appetizer of Fried Green Tomatoes with Crab Salad…yummy…and Lamb Stew. That may sound like a heavy dish, but it was very fresh, lots of tender lamb and veges, not cooked to death…just very, very nice. Plus, they make sure to get you to the show on time!
